Discontinuation of @alumni.unitn.it and @ex-studenti.unitn.it email address

Discontinuation of email addresses automatically assigned to graduates and former students of UniTrento and other important changes to Google Workspace services

From 1 February 2022 mailbox management policies for alumni and ex studenti have changed: below are the indications provided to the UniTrento community during the transition phase.

For the new rules, see the dedicated pages:

As a result of Google's new pricing and storage policies, the University of Trento can no longer ensure the service provided so far to those who are not currently members of our community.

For this reason, the email addresses automatically assigned to graduates ("Alumni") and former students of our University will be discontinued from February 1, 2022 and accounts of this type will no longer be provided.

You do not have to do anything. However, before that date you can:

The email addresses of the @studenti.unitn.it type will not be affected. These addresses will continue to exist for 180 more days after you have ceased to be a student of UniTrento, after which you will no longer have access to Gmail and to the other Google apps reserved to the current University community (eg. Drive).

The changes will only affect the @alumni.unitn.it and @ex-studenti.unitn.it email addresses and Google apps. The username and password of your UniTrento accounts will remain unchanged, so you will still have access to other UniTrento online services (eg. ESSE3) even if you no longer are a member of the University.

We have grouped together the main categories of users who will be affected by the changes:

  • Case 1: users who only have one @alumni.unitn.it email address
  • Case 2: users with both an @studenti.unitn.it address and an @alumni.unitn.it address
  • Case 3: users with both an @unitn.it address and an @alumni.unitn.it address
  • Case 4: users with both an @ex-staff.unitn.it address and an @alumni.unitn.it address
  • Case 5: users with an @ex-studenti.unitn.it email address

Case 1

Users who only have one @alumni.unitn.it email address

The @alumni.unitn.it addresses will be discontinued: all your emails will be deleted and you will no longer be able to access your mailbox.

Inform your contacts about the changes; to save your emails and data, export them using Google TakeOut (see https://icts.unitn.it/en/google-takeout).

The username and password of your old account will remain unchanged, so you will still have access to other UniTrento online services (eg. ESSE3) even if you no longer are a member of the University. Google Workspace accounts to access the e-mail box will be deleted, and all data contained in your Google profile will be permanently deleted.

Case 2

Users with both an @studenti.unitn.it address and an @alumni.unitn.it address

The email addresses of the type @alumni.unitn.it will be discontinued and addresses of this type will no longer be provided.

The email addresses of the @studenti.unitn.it type will not be affected for the moment. These addresses will continue to exist for 180 more days after you have ceased to be a student of UniTrento (when you graduate or terminate your studies), after which you will no longer have access to Gmail and to the other Google apps reserved to the current University community (eg. Drive).

Your username and password to access UniTrento ICT services remain unchanged.

Case 3

Users with both an @unitn.it address and an @alumni.unitn.it address

The email addresses of the type @alumni.unitn.it will be discontinued.

You do not have to do anything. The changes will only affect the email addresses automatically assigned to graduates and former students of UniTrento. Your @unitn.it address will not be affected.

NB: principal address will not be affected and will continue to exist for 180 more days after you have ceased to be employed by UniTrento, after which they will turn into @ex-staff.unitn.it. With this new address you will maintain access to Gmail, but not to the other Google apps reserved to the current University community (eg. Drive, Calendar, Chat, YouTube, Classroom, Google Site).

Your username and password to access UniTrento ICT services remain unchanged.

Case 4

Users with both an @ex-staff.unitn.it address and an @alumni.unitn.it address

The email addresses of the type @alumni.unitn.it will be discontinued.

You do not have to do anything.

NB: addresses of the type @ex-staff.unitn.it (automatically assigned to former staff members) will not be affected and will continue to give you access to Gmail, but not to the other Google apps reserved to the current University community (eg. Drive, Calendar, Chat, YouTube, Classroom, Google Site).

Your username and password to access UniTrento ICT services remain unchanged.

Case 5

Users with an @ex-studenti.unitn.it email address

Email addresses assigned to former students of the University who did not graduate (of the @ex-studenti.unitn.it type) will be discontinued, like the other addresses assigned to graduates. These users will lose access to Gmail and/or all their emails will be deleted. For more information regarding the discontinuation of @alumni.unitn.it addresses, read above.

NB: UniTrento graduates will be offered the opportunity to stay in contact with each other and their University and will receive information on how to do it.
